Marla Goffin – Transformation Interview

Marla Goffin

What is your fitness background?

I wasn’t active or consistently played any sports, I was the occasional athlete. I did gymnastics when I was very young, rec basketball in elementary school, and cheerleading in middle school. All of which I did for one or two seasons. Currently I’m a NASM Certified Personal Trainer.

Why did I choose to transform my body?

Easiest way to put it is I got tired of my own excuses. I realized that they were hiding the truth which was that I was afraid. Afraid of what people would think of me, would they judge me, would I fail at this. The list goes on but I decided to challenge myself, I couldn’t say I was going to fail if I never tried. I was already unhappy with how I felt and looked so for me things couldn’t go anywhere but up.

What was your training like?

I joined a Planet Fitness with a friend in 2010 and started operating the only equipment I knew how. These were the treadmill and elliptical which I operated dressed in baggy T-shirts and sweats to hide my body. I knew I needed more but wasn’t sure where to start and was fortunate to stumble across This gave me a wide variety of exercises and had videos to show you the proper way to execute them. I instantly fell in love with weight training and it gave me something to enjoy while I tried to make working out a part of my lifestyle. I found the buddy system was very helpful in IMG_20140424_020551the beginning for accountability purposes. When the friend I joined with became more than a friend and that went south I fell off the wagon so to speak. Then I remembered the progress I’d made and that my original reason for joining had nothing to do with him and decided to stick with it. I found new, multiple avenues to stay active outside of the gym such as 5ks, pole dance fitness, yoga, etc.

What was your diet like?

I have been a vegetarian (no poultry, seafood, beef, pork, and limited dairy and eggs) since I was 14 years old, breaking the common misconception that all vegetarians are frail, skinny people. Most snack foods which is what was my problem was are vegetarian. In 2010 as a means of taking in more protein, I decided to add back in eggs, dairy, and seafood. I have lately come to experiment with flexible dieting amongst my ventures of finding healthier options for foods.

What supplements did I use?

I’ve never religiously stuck to supplements other than a multi vitamin. When I first got started I tried multiple get slim quick thermogenics and fat burners but none of them worked. I have tried multiple proteins (whey, soy, plant), my stomach is very sensitive to them. I primarily use a pre-workout and whey protein, one of my favourite brands being Cellucor.

How has your lifestyle changed?

My lifestyle has changed drastically no more late night taco bell runs, drowning my sorrows in Oreos and using every excuse to try to explain why I couldn’t lose weight. I’ve committed to living a healthy lifestyle through eating right and working out. No more excuses, if I get knocked down I get right back up.

What challenges did you face?

My constant challenge is balancing my work and workout schedule while taking time to actually sleep. There’s always more I can do in my eyes which leads to me burning the candle at both ends.

How do you feel about your transformation?

IMG_20140306_203531I’m amazed by my transformation especially when I look at old pictures. I can’t believe how far I’ve come and am so proud that I’m not that unhappy girl trapped inside a body she was ashamed of. Now I’m confident in my body and what I can do with and motivating others along the way.

What are your plans for the future?

CAM01733I’m looking forward to furthering my transformation, completing another goal on my fitness bucket list which is to compete in my first figure competition. Most important to me is to continue to grow my personal training business, Phoenix Fitness Evolution, and grow further as a personal trainer, motivator, and coach.

Anything else you’d like to tell us?

Don’t let life’s experiences, past or present, prevent you from having the life you deserve. I’ve been through more than most people know but I refuse to let it rule my life anymore. As a result, I am a happier, healthier person and that demeanour can be contagious. Share the wealth!
