CHOICES! THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN AVERAGE & AWESOME

Hi everyone, this is my first ever blog post so I thought I would start by talking a little about myself. Hopefully it will help you relate to me and what I’m all about!I have been in health and fitness now for 8 years, and have made some incredible friends and experiences along the way.

I am just like you, a regular fitness fanatic who wants to get the best out of life. I still remember my very first ever goal when I was 19 of benching 100kg. Walking out the gym the day I accomplished it I felt on top of the world and its amazing how small personal goals can create such a positive mindset! Since that day I have gone to great lengths to complete many personal goals including; Increasing my deadlift from a 100kg 1 rep max to 225kg at 76kg bodyweight.
I have got involved in many fitness events, completed 4 Tough Guys, the First MK Marathon, 2 half Marathons, 2 survival of the fittest and 1 Cardiac arrest event. I don’t do these to win, I just love the atmosphere, experience and challenge! Screenshot 2014-05-21 22.53.07

One of my proudest achievements was helping my colleague, who quickly became a great friend, go from 16 stone down to 12 stone in 8 months through training with me and eating healthily. We made a goal of completing the Tough guy competition, and he absolutely smashed it! We sent off our story to Men’s Running who were doing a ‘Mate in a State’ competition, we took first place! Winning a complete set of gym gear.

I have been a Police Officer for 5 years now, and this brings challenges everyday to me fitness goals. I can work long shifts, through all times of the day and night. Its not always e
asy but it comes down to choice. I remember one shift, its 4am and I am with an old sweat in the job. We went to get some food, and whilst he got fast food, I bought a packet of Salmon flakes from a 24 hours store, my colleague said to me- In all my years I’ve never seen an officer get salmon flakes at 4am, are you mad! But this was the choice I made to hit my goals and lifestyle. Another choice came about when I wanted to complete a obstacle assault course and I couldn’t get the time off work. ~It was a night shift and I finished at 7 in the morning. Not to let that stop me though, I got home, slept till 8:30 and was at the event raring to go for 11! I slept bloody well all afternoon that day! This is where I want to go onto my first blog theme – Choices.

Everyday when you wake up you have a whole day ahead to make choices. In my job I see everyday bad choices by people leading a life of crime, and occasionally great ones!
Fitness and health is based all around the choices you make. Do you want to feel healthier, look better and live longer?! Then make small decisions each day that reflect that. When you wake up; breakfast should be the most important meal of the day, after 6-8 hours your body needs fuel to kick start the metabolism (and actually burn fat!) but many people miss this meal! Make the choice when you get up that you will spare 10 minutes of your day to eat something healthy and nutritious and over time it will make a real difference. This is the same throughout the day, make small conscious efforts to eat the right foods, nuts, meats, fruit are great choices, and your body will thank you for it.
I am often asked at work how much I train, and they tell me they haven’t got the time to train as much as me. They are often shocked when I say 4 times a week for about 45 minutes. That’s just 3 hours a week out of 168! People seem to think it is either all day everyday or nothing at all. Again it is down to choice, 3 times a week of half an hour is possible for everyone and its down to you what you decide. Will it be salmon flakes at 4 am or a burger and chips! Well that’s your decision to make 😉
