Can A Bodybuilder Be A Gymnast?

MuscleMania Universe champion Ty O-g takes on the final stages of his mission to learn a new gymnastic move in Part Two of this short series. Here we see him take on the rings – first the low rings, then the real deal – the Olympic high rings. As a champion bodybuilder, Ty is always looking for a new challenge – this one is to increase his flexibility and test is functionality as a strength athlete.

CAN A BODYBUILDER BE A GYMNAST? (Part 2 of 2)

What a great video! Just goes to show that not all levels of fitness capability are shown by aesthetics. Just because a person looks like they can lift heavy weight does not mean that they are capable of other activities like gymnastics. There is still work to be done. This helped solidify my personal goals for fitness; Whilst working to obtain great aesthetics, the functionality of being able to do things like ‘be a boss on gymnastics rings, climbing etc’ requires me; Not to overlook this kind of training. Training not only for power but control and form in a functional way.

I have heard a lot about ‘Calisthenics’ which is basically all bodyweight exercises working with not only strength and power but control. Control in the sense of separated movements that make up a whole transition. I know this is done within the gym for movements like ‘Lat pull-up’ but something like the ‘muscle up’ is a different movement all-together. I am interested to find out how each muscle group is used, primary, secondary and so on. In a movement such as the ‘muscle up’ how the muscles are being worked in conjunction to one another is an area I will most likely learn at Uni. I will be sure to share and link to this post when done.
